Brand new Coronation Food Hub opens in Glasgow, bringing three charities together under one roof for the first time
- Health and Wellbeing
- Social Inclusion
On 24 June, Move On formally opened Scotland’s first Coronation Food Hub from its Glasgow base on South Street. The Hub, in Scotstoun, is the first in Scotland and brings together three charities – Move On, Felix and Multibank Scotland – under one roof for the first time.
As part of the Coronation Food Project, inspired by His Majesty King Charles III, the newly refurbished site will play a vital role in providing surplus food to communities in need across the region.
The event was attended by local supporters of the project including key partners, representatives from the Coronation Food Project and Glasgow City Council, food industry partners, and charities that will receive food from the new hub.
Food redistribution supporting communities in Glasgow and beyond
Move On has been operating FareShare Glasgow and the West of Scotland in the Glasgow area for 15 years, providing food to 100 charities and community groups in the region. Last year the charity redistributed the equivalent of 2.5 million meals worth of food.
This investment in the Glasgow site will allow Move On to distribute up to 40% more food regionally, store and distribute more fresh produce and frozen food, and double the number of people who will benefit from its training and volunteering opportunities to 200 every year.
Improvements include:
- A new warehouse and distribution space, allowing Move On to reach more community partners with high-quality surplus food.
- A new 34 pallet freezer massively increasing capacity to receive, store and distribute frozen food.
- A fully fitted state of the art catering kitchen, allowing Move On to cater for volunteers and corporate guests on site.
- A new space for delivery of forklift training (allowing an increase in the number of participants).
- A new training suite, with three training rooms and training kitchen , allowing Move On to deliver training for different groups simultaneously, meaning that that more people can be supported.
Further support for people in need through Multibank
In addition, the site is home to a brand new Multibank for Glasgow. This expanded site will enable Move On to provide both surplus food and essential items to people experiencing poverty.
The new Glasgow Multibank will support communities across Glasgow and the wider city region, ensuring that essential items, including clothing, hygiene products and household supplies, reach families, children and individuals experiencing hardship.
Former Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, who is President of The Multibank Scotland, attended the opening of the new charity hub.
The Coronation Food Project
The Coronation Food Project, inspired by His Majesty King Charles III, aims to bridge the gap between food insecurity and food waste by saving and circulating more surplus food.
Since its launch in 2023, the Coronation Food Project, with the support of its food industry partners, has provided more than 11 million meals to communities across the UK via the Felix
network.
Paul Sullivan, Chief Executive, Move On said:
The Move On Coronation Food Hub marks a significant step forward in our mission to fight hunger across Glasgow and the West of Scotland. By increasing our capacity to rescue and redistribute surplus food, we’ll be able to reach even more people facing food insecurity while ensuring good food doesn’t go to waste. Over three years we expect to redistribute the equivalent of 3.5 million meals worth of food to people across the region.
The Hub is about more than food: it’s also an investment in people. Through training, skills development and employment support, we’re creating valuable opportunities for local people to build confidence, gain experience and move towards sustainable employment.
Charlotte Hill, CEO of Felix said:
We are delighted to be part of this pioneering project for Scotland, bringing together three charities under one roof for the first time. This fourth Coronation Food Hub, the first in Scotland, marks an important milestone for the Coronation Food Project and for the wider mission to provide essential support to families and communities in need.
At a time when demand for our food is growing and people are struggling with the cost of living, this type of collaboration is needed more than ever. This Hub brings together the local expertise of Move On; the UK-wide food redistribution capacity of the Felix network; and the experience of Multibank Scotland in providing non-food items to those in need. We are enormously grateful to all the supporters and partners who have made this possible. Together, we can make a real difference.
Alice Moxley, Chief Executive, Multibank said:
We are delighted to be partnering with Move On to establish a new Glasgow Multibank, supporting communities across Glasgow and the wider City Region.
Move On’s deep local knowledge, strong community relationships and commitment to practical support make them an ideal partner for this next stage of Multibank Scotland’s growth.
Together, we will help ensure that more essential goods reach the people and places where they can make the greatest difference.
