'It’s ok to not have it all figured out yet, as long as you’re trying'

'It’s nice to know I’m not alone and other people sometimes feel how I feel'

Our funding helped the organisation to provide disadvantaged young people and their families with financial literacy training, a reading club and mental health support.

The financial literacy sessions educated young people about budgeting, responsible use of credit cards, saving, fraud and other subjects – such as teaching attendees how to avoid coercion into committing fraud. The ‘Mind over Matter‘ series focused on mental health and equipped the young people with tools to manage stress and anxiety through various coping mechanisms.

The reading club was aimed at primary school age children, and worked to foster a love of reading and improve vocabulary.

Young people who attended a session responded positively, saying:

‘I learned it’s never too late to change my mindset’

‘I liked having a space to talk about how we feel’

‘I learned that everyone has mental and physical health’

‘It’s ok to not have it all figured out yet, as long as you’re trying

‘It’s nice to know I’m not alone and other people sometimes feel how I feel’

One parent of a child who attended the reading club said

‘My son is in year 2 and I was pleased he joined the club. I did not know he could open up with other children. He is always happy when it is Saturday. I did not know he could read books like that and hearing him explain some of the words blows my mind. Good job.’

Overall, the project benefitted 42 young people and their families. In the future, MGUK Foundation hope to deliver more financial literacy sessions, as they have identified a real need for further education in this area.
